Three of Wands

The man on the hill isn't waiting for a ship. He's come out to greet one. In the Waite-Smith Three of Wands he stands with his back to us, facing a sea painted gold — proof the channels are already open, the routes already cleared, ships already visible in the distance. Three wands stand planted in the ground behind him. His hand rests lightly on one, not reaching for the water. Nothing about his posture is urgent. Most readers call this card waiting. That reading is wrong. The seed is already sown, the ship already sailed. This is the horizon, and only the one who planted gets to look at it.

Upright, work you did earlier is starting to come back. Proposals you sent, connections you built, skills you practiced — they're answering, slowly. The job now isn't planting new seeds, it's managing the route: answering the replies that come back, on time. Answer late, and the ship that returned sails off again; only a harbor that's ready to receive gets the cargo. Being ready to receive is half of growth. But if the card is reversed, the story changes. Reversed means either no ship has been launched and you're only staring at the horizon, or a ship has launched and you're running to the harbor every day, unable to trust it. How many times a day do you refresh the results screen? Checking doesn't make the ship arrive faster. Impatience has no say in a voyage.

Old farmers treated daily hands-on-the-paddy as taboo after sowing — pulling at the sprout to check it kills it. Psychology's research on delayed gratification reaches the same place: the ability to endure waiting is what separates the size of outcomes. But endurance is not neglect. Only someone tending the harbor has earned the right to call it waiting.

Today, limit yourself to checking on anything in progress once. Every time the urge hits, write one line in your next voyage's prep list instead. By evening that list is today's harvest — its line count is tomorrow's fleet. Stop digging up what you planted. Save your hands for the next field.
